Top Fire Hazards In Your Muskegon Home

Hole in laundry room floor from dryer fire This Muskegon home suffered fire and soot damage from a dryer fire.

Normally the place we feel safest is our home.  To stay safe in your residence, read the following top fire hazards that can potentially happen in your Muskegon home and how to prevent them from happening.

  1. Electrical Outlet Issues - the top cause of house fires in the United States stems from issues with electrical outlets.  We are currently using more electronic devices than ever before and most times using too many on a single outlet.  To help prevent a fire, be sure not to exceed your voltage on a single outlet in your home.
  2. Washer and Dryer - they are a leading cause of fires in homes.  Routine maintenance and cleaning can help prevent a fire.  Make sure to clean the filters and vents, inside and outside.
  3. Outdated Home Wiring - household wiring should be checked routinely to avoid circumstances that trigger major fire damage in your home.  Often wiring that is outdated, worn, or even compromised from animals can cause fire hazards in and outside your home.
  4. Decorative Lights - be sure to take proper precaution when using decorative lights including outside lights, plugs, surge protectors, extension cords, and turning off lighting when you are not around to minimize risk.
  5. Hair Tools - never forget to unplug styling tools.  Make sure that your curling iron, hair straightener, and hair dryer are off and placed on a heat resistant surface to reduce the chance of a fire.
  6. Toaster - crumbs inside the toaster can be dangerous as they can spark, which can lead to hazardous problems in the kitchen. Make sure to clean your toaster regularly.
  7. Candles - the ambiance and aroma of candles are pleasant, however, you need to be cautious where you place them in your home and be sure to put them out prior to going to bed or leaving.  Also when using them, always use a holder that prevents them from falling over, and set them on a flat hard surface.
  8. Smoking - if you or someone in your home is a smoker, try to do so outside. Always keep lighters and matches out of reach of children.
  9. Dust in Electronic Sockets - dust can accumulate inside electrical sockets, and if not cleaned regularly, may ignite and result in a fire. Use a can of compressed air to blow dust out of the outlet and surrounding area.
  10. Electric Blankets - during colder months they are great for keeping us warm but they potentially can cause a fire.  If your blanket is older and has some wear and tear, throw it out! When not using, do not fold the blanket as it helps to prevent electrical issues that can lead to a fire hazard.
